Italic calligraphy is often admired for its graceful appearance, but it can also be one of the most approachable and useful calligraphy styles to learn.

In this introductory workshop, we’ll explore the foundations of italic lettering through a clear and structured method designed to make the process manageable and enjoyable. Students should already be comfortable using a broad-edge pen, but no prior experience with italic is necessary.

During the workshop, we’ll cover:

  • The essential structure of all lower-case italic letterforms

  • Pen angle and stroke relationships

  • Basic spacing and rhythm

  • Techniques for creating smoother, more confident lettering

  • BONUS: A special technique for making ALL of your broad-edge calligraphy lettering styles more beautiful and elegant!

Whether you are exploring italic for the first time or revisiting it after previous study, this workshop is designed to provide a solid and accessible foundation.

For those who wish to continue, these skills provide the basis for deeper study of the italic hand and its many creative applications.

WHO: This workshop is designed for adults and mature adolescents.

PREREQUISITE: Students should be comfortable using a broad-edge calligraphy pen. However, NO prior experience with the italic lettering style is required.
